Dearest Kateri! Well done my friend! Of course I will be here with you! How could I not? And when our plumbing crisis and daughter crisis is navigated, I shall upgrade! Sending love, of course! ❤️❤️
So happy for you, Kateri, in your new adventure!! So looking forward to all you will be offering here!! Here's to making the world a little more kinder and joyous - a chance to see a little more beauty in a world we otherwise might be too distracted to see.
I have two of your watercolor books and also bought your paint brushes; I like your work and I will definitely read your blog. Thank you for being vulnerable, excited, and open. Happy February 1st.
Happy February first! A good day overall. And here is to the second and that we take a moment here and there to find beauty and wonder and awe in what is right around us :)
I’m so happy that you have come to Substack, Kateri. Yesterday I joined your Patreon group. I’ve known about you for ages, and love your book Look Closer, Draw Better. But then I discovered that you are a Companion of the Order of St George, and heard your talk at the Huntington, and I felt like I had found a kindred spirit. In these strange, uncertain times, I find great comfort and inspiration in reading John Ruskin, and I also often use The Elements of Drawing in my weekly botanical art classes. Recently, I came across the first four volumes of Modern Painters in a wonderful 1906 pocket edition and now I carry a volume with me wherever I go. I’m really looking forward to reading your contributions here on Substack. Thank you so much for keeping them public - at the moment I can’t afford to upgrade, but will if circumstances improve. 😊
Thank you, Jane. It means a lot that you are here, reading. Gosh,I find that world could really use some Ruskin wisdom on social issues right now. Have you read Unto this Last? His most important work, I think. A topic for another week.
Thank you so much for replying, Kateri. I couldn’t agree more that the world could use Ruskin’s wisdom right now. It’s a thought that constantly haunts me as I read his work. I haven’t read Unto This Last, but how serendipitous that you should mention it, because I’m currently waiting for the delivery of a vintage (1881) edition that I found online! Perhaps it is the romantic in me, but I prefer the older editions - so many of the new editions are not very well-designed or on nice paper. I am really looking forward to reading it.
I understand. I do not have the budget for the vintage books, but have been gifted two that I treasure. However, the Penguin Classics version has a must read introduction by my friend Clive Wilmer. You might be able to get it at your local library.
My vintage copies aren’t very valuable - only in ‘acceptable’ condition. Much as I would like to own fine editions, that is only a pipe dream! My four volumes of Modern Painters were just €12 in my local secondhand bookshop! But I treasure them. I will check our library for the Penguin Classics version, because I would certainly like to read Clive Wilmer’s introduction. Thank you, Kateri.
